KTP Associate- The real-time detection of Clostridium difficile

£21,000 to £31,000 per year plus generous training and travel budget - dependent on experience. 2 year fixed-term contract

Clostridium difficile is the principal cause of hospital acquired infection in the UK contributing to thousands of deaths and costing healthcare providers around the World £billions every year.  To address this pressing healthcare issue researchers at Universal Sensors Ltd (Duxford, Cambridgeshire UK), working with Cambridge Design Partnership LLP (Toft, Cambridgeshire UK) are working to develop a hand-held system capable of rapidly detecting the spore in hospital environmental samples.  As part of this development initiative, Cardiff University and Cambridge Design Partnership (funded by Universal Sensors) have been awarded a Knowledge Transfer Partnership.

The development of spore-specific antibodies is a key element of this project so the candidate must have a strong background in antibody production and epitope characterization.  Microbiological experience is desirable but not essential.  The successful candidate will be a Cardiff University employee under a two year fixed term contract and will work closely with Universal Sensors to transfer knowledge on antibody development.  The successful candidate will ideally have a PhD in a relevant subject area and have and a strong interest in point of care diagnostics and the commercialisation of research-driven technology.  There is a unique opportunity to be involved in this cutting-edge programme, which will lead to a device that will ultimately be used in hospitals throughout the World.

The project will involve the individual spending extended periods of time in both Cardiff and Cambridge and for the successful applicant, there may be the opportunity of employment with Universal Sensors at the end of the KTP programme.
