 Professor Chris Lowe

 Dr John Broughall

John has had a 30 year career in laboratory diagnostics, both within the public and commercial sectors, developing various applications of rapid or automated systems.

Following a BSc in Microbiology and a PhD plus post doctoral study at York in energy metabolism, John began his career studying both the in vitro activity and pharmokinetics of new antibiotic, whilst working within a specialist NHS pathology laboratory.

John further developed this specialism with an appointment as applied microbiologist with a major international company in the industrial research & development sector, principally developing rapid methods for application in both food and clinical microbiology. Since then his career has diversified, enabling him to take a variety of senior management positions within major international companies within the laboratory diagnostics industry, both in the UK and Germany.

Managing projects developing automated systems for microbiology John instigated the development of the first successful continuous monitoring system for the detection of positive clinical blood culture samples and also a particle counting system used for the diagnosis of urinary tract infections.

Recently John was Technical Director to a spin out company from Oxford University, developing multi-analyte biosensors designed to measure blood biochemistries, where he took the project from first concept to clinical trial stage.

John is currently employed as a Scientific Advisor on antibiotics within a major UK pharmaceutical company.
